First Friday Freebies: Coffee

One of my biggest pet peeves as a new designer was the bait-and-switch of “TOTALLY FREE!!!” fonts, images & design tools. Free fonts offered only one weight or were missing punctuation entirely. Free stock images would require I sign up, complete a 10-page survey, create a profile, and do 73 jumping jacks for an image the size of a postage stamp. Free brushes, actions, and other cool tools were only free every third Tuesday of months with an ‘A’, and I’d need to upgrade to Pro if I wanted more than one piece of the set.

I still love free stuff, but now I demand it come without headaches, hidden charges, and strings attached. It takes some work to wade through the hype, but because I sympathize with the designer’s unique struggles (and also because I feel like I can never pass up an opportunity for Karma points) I’ve done the work for you. So without further ado, I present First Friday Freebies, which is exactly what it sounds like; the first Friday of every month I’ll offer a selection of free design resources I’ve found and vetted for your convenience. You’re welcome.

It’s morning, last night I was up late catching up on my favorite shows on OnDemand, and now I’m seriously wondering why I can’t buy coffee in IV form. For some mysterious reason I’ve had a helluva time finding free, high-quality coffee imagery in the past, so today I’m covering the bases with a selection of delightful caffeinated beverages for you to enjoy.

“First published in 2004…its Bold is reminiscent of 1920s coffee house typography, while the rather thin fonts bridge the gap to present times.”

Coffee Stains & Splashes vector brush set by Leech-ed
I’ve used this set in Illustrator to create coffee stains, blood splashes, grungy fonts and more. If you combine the 20 brush shapes the possibilities are endless.
