  • Situation

Jay Hewlett, a California-based actor and comedian, has been touring and honing his skills across the US, Europe and Asia for nearly 20 years. His website, social media, business cards and merchandise had not been updated in over a decade and lacked a consistent visual aesthetic. Jay required a cohesive brand identity as well as a visual concept & print collateral for his upcoming ‘The Comic That Wouldn’t Die’ comedy tour.

  • Strategy

With only a short time until his first performance, his tour collateral was the most pressing issue. Inspired by the 50’s sci-fi movie posters, we ordered a custom portrait of Jay as a miked-up reanimated head, and surrounded it with vintage fonts, a dark red color scheme, smoky background and as many horror-hype exclamation points as we could get away with.

A few months later we sat down to develop his personal brand identity, which needed to communicate his comedic abilities yet still be serious enough for acting resumes and press materials.

  • Solution

The tagline ‘actor. comedian. man with issues.’ embraces both careers and incorporates a central theme of much of his comedy material—grumpy, middle-aged everyman who’s had it up to -HERE- with…well, pretty much everything. The vintage microphone used in his tour material popped up again in his logo, flanked by his name in a simple sans serif with cheeky touch in the ‘E’ nestled in the lap of the ‘L’ in Hewlett. A neon version was integrated into a publicity photo at The Comedy Palace wearing his lucky shirt—the same shirt that inspired the bright color scheme in his stationery, social media, and website design.
